I find her in the hallway near the library, and when she sees me, she immediately spins around and heads in the opposite direction. By the time she reaches the stairs, she’s practically running to get away from me.

“Willow, I want to talk to you,” I say as calmly as I can force my voice to sound.

She says nothing and never turns around to look at me. In fact, she begins to take the steps by twos.

“Willow, I’m talking to you.”

Still she remains silent.

By the time she reaches the second floor, she’s running. I’m not sure where she thinks she’s going that I won’t follow. Wouldn’t it be easier to just talk to me instead of breaking into a full sprint and then having to talk to me all the same when I finally catch up to her?

She disappears into our bedroom, and I follow her about twenty seconds later to find her standing next to her side of the bed. The site of our truce is once again our battlefield.

“Willow, when I say I want to talk to you, I expect you to listen.”

Her expression changes from angry to hateful, and she squints her eyes at me. “You can say whatever you want, Maddox. You can even trap me in this room and force me to listen. That doesn’t mean I have to care about a word you say.”

Jesus, this is not what I wanted to do today. Does everything have to be an uphill battle?

“I wanted to explain what happened out there.”

Never once in my life have I said those words to a woman. I’ve never felt the need to explain a damn thing to any woman I’ve ever known. That I somehow am compelled to do it with this one baffles me, frankly.

My attempt at rekindling our truce fails. Shaking her head, she continues to glare at me. “I don’t care, so don’t bother.”

“I don’t want to fight with you, Willow. We got along pretty well for the past few days, haven’t we? I’d like that to continue.”

“Then why won’t you let me have one thing that makes me happy? I was just talking to your brother. I have no one here to do anything with. He’s your brother. What was the crime in us just talking?”

The king size bed between us means I could lean over and touch her she’s that close, but it feels like an entire world separates us at this moment. I can’t explain why I reacted like I did. Well, I can, but I don’t want to.

“I have no problem with you being happy. I had the sisters come here to make you anything you wanted.”

The anger fades from Willow’s face, but she frowns at me now. “You had them come here for you, not me. I was fine with my old clothes. That wasn’t to make me happy but to make you happy, Maddox.”

“Do you think I don’t want you to be happy here? Do you think I enjoy being married
